When we think about anger it is often followed by the desire to find ways not to satisfy this emotion. However, it's an entity of our human condition and it needs to be satisfied. The dilemma that exists is that anger has gotten a bad reputation; so misunderstood.
A shift in our paradigm perspective is so necessary as it pertains to anger.
Anger can be likened to an alarm, alerting you to a situation that needs your attention. Addressing this emotion with its intended purpose on the forefront of your mind allows necessary change. Seeing anger as the driving force to move mountains and spearhead changes in our lives; to promote new growth is its intended purpose. What many have experienced from the family of origin as a child is the out-of-control destructive side of anger or the burial of it as something to never address openly and honestly. Many were under the influence of an emotion gone bad. Either response to anger is dysfunctional.
We can benefit greatly if we utilize anger’s powerful force to promote positive changes to our present situations. Here’s how:
Realize its presence and name the emotion of anger.
Understand why it is present at this time.
Explore how we have dealt with it in the past.
Verbalize the unmet need in a non threatening, honest fashion to open the space for that need to be met in a healthy, functional manner.
Once our need is satisfied, the anger dissipates and life moves forward. Imagine how much strive, negativity and frustration could be averted with this process?
If only we knew then what we know now…
